This recipe was originally for cinnamon twists, but when we find a good thing, we usually want more of it (variations).

Base

Mix together:

5 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp.. active dry yeast

Beat with a whisk and add:

4 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 cup oil

Knead for a few minutes and then place in a greased, covered bowl and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.  Then let stand at room temperature for 1/2 - 1 hour before forming.  Press half of dough flat.  Cut into thin strips, twist and tie into knot.  Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet.  Bake at 375ºF for about 15 minutes (until lightly browned).

Cinnamon Twists

Roll the strips in the following mixture before knotting:

1 cup cinnamon and sugar mixture

Herb and Cheese Twists

Add to flour mixture:

1 tsp. dried crushed parsley, some chives
1/2 - 1 tsp. onion powder
1 cup med. or old grated cheddar cheese

Pizza Twists

Add to flour mixture:

3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning

Replace milk with:

1 cup tomato sauce
10 slices pepperoni sausage (approximately)
