Ingredients
6 onions
8 cups beef stock
white wine
by leaf
1/4 tsp dry thyme
1/4 tsp sugar
2 cloves minced garlic
french bread (sliced and toasted)
1.5 cups grated Swiss gruyere cheese
- Large saucepan: onions in olive oil until well browned. At 10 mins add sugar, cook another 20 minutes.
- Add garlic. Saute one minute.
- Add stock, wine, bay leaf, thyme. Partially cover and simmer 30 mins.
- Season with salt & pepper.
- Ladle into bowls, cover with toast, sprinkle with cheese.
- Broil for 10 mins at 350 F.
