Combine the following:

  • 1 lb. hamburger (browned slightly)
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 pkg. dry onion soup mix
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 14 cups water
  • 4 cups canned tomatoes
  • 3 beef bouillon cubes

Simmer for two hours.  During last half hour of cooking, add:

  • 1/2 cup pearl barley
  • 1 pkg. (10 oz.) frozen mixed vegetables (optional)
