Since our family likes monkey breads and likes to make yeast dough – I thought this would be a winner.
Dough:
Mix together in large bowl:
- 2 cups flour
- 3 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp yeast
- 1 tsp salt
Heat together: (110 F ideal)
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 Tbsp butter
Stir hot liquid into flour mixture.
Add:
- 1 egg, beaten
Stir. Add more flour, a bit at a time, to make a soft dough. Knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.
- 1 to 1 1/2 cups flour needed to make soft dough
Cover dough, let rest for 10 minutes.
Topping and assembly:
Mix together:
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Have ready:
- 1 cup walnuts or pecans, coarsely chopped
- 3/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/3 cup melted butter
Grease a 10 inch seamless tube pan.
Divide dough into 32 pieces.
Dip each piece in melted butter and then in sugar/cinnamon
Place ingredients in the pan in this order:
- 1/4 cup syrup; covering pan bottom.
- 1/2 cup nuts.
- 16 dough pieces
- 1/4 cup syrup
- 1/2 cup nuts
- remaining 16 dough pieces.
- remaining syrup
Cover and leave until doubled in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours.
Bake at 375 F for about 40 minutes
Cool in pan for 20 minutes
Turn onto serving plate.
